Victoria DIY Street Party: Everything You Need To Know

Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions.
Is it still happening? If so where and when?
This is still happening on April 22nd at 8pm. We will gather at 8pm at Centennial Square to hear bands and Djs. There will be several mobile sound systems play varying types of music. We will then snake though downtown partying under the night sky without being manhandled by bouncers or a price of admission.
How do you plan to ensure the safety, security of both event participants and the rest of the public in the area?
We are expecting this event to be fun and festive. We already have a team of volunteers dedicated to harm reduction, garbage and insuring safety to all. We have been in contact with the Vancity Mayday organizers who have put on similar events. We have street medics who have participated in large gatherings like this as well. Above all else, we will be reminding attendees in the days leading up to this event to stay hydrated and use the buddy system – good advice for any night on the town.
Why did you decide to not respond to attempts by the police and city to communicate about your event?
We are inspired by grassroots protests, the DIY music scene, tent cities, and bike raves. We are not liaisoning with the cops and the City out of respect for the events, people, and communities they marginalize.
Is this a street party or a protest?
It is being organized has a street party. There may be underlining political elements but it is about getting together to have fun.
Why are you doing this?
We want to demonstrate that people can do great things when they come together. Our message is definitely about freedom and unity, but also protest. We are inspired by grassroots protests, the DIY music scene, tent cities, and bike raves. The cops and the City might have cooperated with our event, but we are doing it this way out of respect for the events they marginalize.
Should I be worried about the police being there? Will they shut it down?
It is our right under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to peacefully assemble.  As for the police you should not be intimidated by them. If you plan to drink or partake in other substances we ask for you to be respectful to those around you.
How many people will be there?
A lot.
Are you still accepting performers?
Yes, if you would like to DJ and have your own equipment just show up. If you don’t, message us and we can set you up with someone who does.
How can I help?
We do already have harm reduction, street medics and clean up crew in place, but could always use more. You could could also donate to our go fund me:
If you would like to help send us a message at vicdiystreetparty@gmail.com If you have any concerns we are happy to address them.

In Response To The Haters

The City and cops have started spamming this event, so we wanted to address some of the things they’ve brought up.

“You should have coordinated this with the City.”

The point of this event is to show that people can just get together and horizontally organize a dope event with a few hundred crowd-sourced dollars. Coordinating with the City means organizing on their terms. Terms that prioritize gentrification over community. This isn’t just a party, it’s a model for social organizing. For one night we’re going to reclaim the space, joy, and freedom that capitalism takes away from us every day. For one night, we’re not going to ask.

“The VicPD is concerned about safety.”

We’re calling bullshit. Most of the people who got hurt at Vancouver’s recent street party were pepper sprayed by the cops. Otherwise, the event wasn’t sketchier than any club. We believe that they’re concerned about the riotous potential of a group of rowdy people having fun downtown, and the security of downtown businesses, not individuals’ safety. I know Victoria isn’t used to people actually partying downtown on a Friday night, but really? We can can take care of ourselves, thanks.

“What about the local businesses?” Like running out of liquor and pizza. I’m sure they will benefit from thousands of people. Duh!

“Is there a cleanup crew?”

We’ll have trash cans set up. We’d love volunteers.

TL;DR:We’re having a party. Everyones Invited!!!!!!!!!!
